Tenants at 188 E 93rd Street would very much like to see a plaque on 179 E 93rd Street marking the Marx Brothers’ childhood home, at the very least!
Our building, comprised of three old law tenements, was purchased by the Ohebshalom family of real estate speculators in 2003, and these landlords have worked hard to make tenants’ lives miserable ever since. They destroyed our lovely courtyard and gardens to increase their commercial rent roll. Due to lack of enforcement by city and state agencies, it is almost impossible to even slow down the Shaloms and the speculators who tore down the three 19th Century townhouses to make room for new multi-million dollar condos. It’s not going to stop unless we take a stand together. We must defend and protect our block!
